The Best-Kept Secret Garden of Italy

I had the rare privilege of visiting Italy for the first time last year in the early fall. My friends and I stayed in a little bedroom town outside of Rome called Cisterna di Latina in the province of Lazio, just 64 kilometers southeast of Rome. When our friends offered to take us to this garden, I did not know I was going to step into the best-kept secret garden of Italy: The Garden of Ninfa. I had been to Central Park, and the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx. I do not have a green thumb though I enjoy beautiful gardens and a well-manicured lawn, but nothing prepared me for Eden-like retreat.

The Garden of Ninfa is often dubbed “the most romantic garden in the world,” and it truly lives up to its reputation. This oasis feels like a faraway land of enchantment. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, and nature weaves its magic through medieval ruins, babbling streams, and a rich tapestry of flora.

The Garden of Ninfa is situated in the territory of Cisterna di Latina, in the province of Lazio, central Italy. Covering an impressive 105 hectares (260 acres), it has been declared an Italian natural monument. But what makes Ninfa truly special is its 8-hectare landscape garden within the larger park. Let’s explore its unique features:

  1. Medieval Ruins: Imagine wandering through the remnants of an ancient settlement. The garden is built upon the ruins of the village of Ninfa, which dates back to Roman times. You’ll find crumbling houses, churches, bridges, and even a castle.
  2. Exotic Flora: The garden boasts over 1,300 plant species, including cherry and ornamental apple trees, deciduous magnolias, birches, marsh iris, and a sensational variety of Japanese maples. In spring, it’s a riot of multicolored flowers and countless shades of green reflected in the water.
  3. Watercourses: Streams crisscross the landscape, creating a soothing soundtrack as you explore. Crystal-clear water flows under ancient bridges, adding to the garden’s ethereal charm.
  4. Swans and Wildlife: Keep an eye out for swans gliding gracefully on the ponds. The garden is also home to various bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
  5. Bamboo Pavilion: One of the garden’s unique features is a bamboo pavilion. Imagine stepping into a serene space surrounded by rustling bamboo leaves.

Seasons at The Garden of Ninfa

  • Spring: Blossoms burst forth, creating a riot of colors. Cherry trees, magnolias, and tulips steal the show. The air is fragrant, and the ruins come alive with flowering vines.
  • Summer: The garden remains lush, but the heat can be intense. Seek shade under ancient trees and enjoy the coolness near the water.
  • Fall: Japanese maples turn fiery red, and the landscape takes on a golden hue. It’s a quieter time to visit, with fewer crowds.
  • Winter: The garden’s evergreen holm oak provides shelter, and the ruins stand stark against the winter sky. It’s a peaceful season to explore.

Getting to The Garden of Ninfa

  • From Rome: Ninfa is an easy day trip from Rome. You can take a train to Norma or Sermoneta, and then a short taxi ride to the garden.
  • Tickets: Adult tickets cost €15.00, and children under 12 enter for free. Tickets are available online, and you can select your entrance time. Guided tours depart every 10 minutes.

Here is their website.

Final Thoughts

The Garden of Ninfa is a place where history, nature, and romance intertwine. Whether you visit in spring when flowers bloom or in winter when the ruins stand silent, Ninfa will leave an indelible mark on your heart.

I already plan to go back with my family hopefully very soon! 🌹✨
